Viewing PDF and other files

Some of the material presented on this site is via a file type known as "PDF". PDF stands for Portable Document Format, and was developed so that formatted documents would print the same and look the same way on every computer. Learn more about PDFs here.

In order to view PDFs you need to have a PDF reader installed on your computer. If you're not sure if you have one, please click this link that leads to a PDF file. If you are prompted, choose to Open the file. If you can't open the file, or are only given the option to Save the file, you may not have a reader installed.

Options:

  • you may wish to install the free Adobe Reader; this link leads to a page that should detect what operating system your computer uses and offer up the matching version of Adobe Reader; but note that the page also by default installs the Google Toolbar, so if you don't wish that, uncheck that option
  • you may wish to choose another free PDF reader:
    • Windows users may find some options on this or this safe download site (do a search for "pdf reader"), or at another site you trust; you might also find this article of interest
    • Mac and Linux users, and users of other operating systems, may wish to look here or consult other people who are familiar with your operating system and the software that works on it.

Other file types:

On this or other school sites, or in Edline, you may encounter other types of non-web-page documents that will require special software to view. These will most commonly be produced by the school's primary office document software package, Microsoft Office 2007. Document extensions might be:
.ppt, .pptx, .pps, or .ppsx = slideshow files
.doc or .docx = text files (word processing)
.xls or .xlsx = spreadsheet files
The easiest way to deal with any future occurance of such files is to load OpenOffice, a free office suite that handles the file types mentioned. Learn more about it here.  If you wish to download just a viewer from Microsoft for a certain mentioned file type, go here.
